run by psychologist Dr Karen Burns

Meeting Ourselves with Kindness

What is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion is treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we might offer a good friend during difficult times. Rather than harsh self-criticism, it involves responding to our own struggles with warmth and care.

At its core, self-compassion has three key elements:

  • Mindfulness: Acknowledging our challenging experiences without avoiding or exaggerating them
  • Common humanity: Recognizing that difficulty and imperfection are part of shared human experience
  • Self-kindness: Meeting our struggles with understanding rather than judgment

While many of us find it natural to extend compassion to others, being compassionate with ourselves can feel unfamiliar or challenging. This course offers practical ways to develop this essential skill, helping you respond to life's inevitable ups and downs with greater wisdom and care.

CONNECTION AND SUPPORT

Who is this
group for?

This group is designed for people who want to develop a kinder, more balanced relationship with themselves. It's particularly suited for:

  • Those who tend to be self-critical or hard on themselves
  • People who'd like to respond to personal difficulties with greater understanding
  • Individuals seeking to build emotional resilience in a supportive environment
  • Those who find it easier to extend compassion to others than to themselves
  • People interested in learning practical tools for self-support during challenging time

No previous experience with mindfulness or self-compassion is needed – the main requirements are openness and willingness to explore these concepts in a group setting.

As a small group of 10 participants, you'll have the opportunity to learn and practice in an inclusive, supportive environment where questions and discussion are welcomed.

Note: This course is suitable for individuals experiencing mild to moderate stress, anxiety, or self-criticism. If you're currently going through severe mental health challenges, we recommend discussing participation with your mental health professional to ensure this is the right time for you to engage in group work.
